The short answer

Architectural shingles are the reference option in many replacement comparisons. The site model uses $5.21–$6.82 per square foot of roof area before tear-off, permits, deck allowance, pitch and location adjustments.

What the product label does and does not tell you

“Architectural” describes a laminated shingle design, while Class 4 refers to an impact-resistance classification for a specific product. Neither label alone tells you the full installed assembly. Ask for the manufacturer and exact product line, underlayment, starter and ridge products, ventilation approach, flashing plan, and workmanship coverage.

For impact-resistant shingles, verify the exact model’s rating and ask your insurance company directly whether it changes the premium or deductible. Discounts vary by insurer, policy, state, and proof requirements. A potential discount is not guaranteed savings.

Area and job scope drive the total

Contractors price the actual sloped roof surface. Pitch, overhangs, dormers, valleys, stories, and waste factor separate that measurement from a home’s floor area. Tear-off may be charged by roofing square and by layer; old felt, flashing, and damaged deck can add work.

Request a proposal that spells out:

  • measured roof area and material quantity
  • product name, color, and accessory components
  • tear-off layers and disposal
  • underlayment, drip edge, flashing, and ventilation
  • deck replacement unit price and approval process
  • permits, cleanup, and workmanship warranty

Compare the total and line items across at least two or three bids with the same spec. If one quote is much lower, check whether it omits a layer of tear-off or the necessary flashing.

Sources and limits

Our installed ranges are 2026 planning estimates from the material model described in our methodology. We compare Homewyse roofing installation cost data, Angi’s 2026 roof replacement guide, Fixr’s roof replacement guide, and BLS roofer wage data. These sources measure different scopes, so we use them as planning inputs, not as a single quote database or a guarantee. Check current local bids and the product manufacturer’s specifications before choosing a roof.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an asphalt shingle roof cost per square foot?

TheRoofBill’s 2026 planning inputs are $4–$6 per roof sq ft for 3-tab, $5.21–$6.82 for architectural, and $6.50–$9.50 for Class 4 impact-resistant shingles. They are model inputs and exclude separately listed project items.

Are Class 4 shingles worth it?

They may be worth comparing in hail-prone areas, but ask your insurer whether the exact product qualifies for a premium credit and how long the credit lasts. Do not assume a discount without written confirmation.

How long do asphalt shingles last?

Our broad planning assumptions are 15–20 years for 3-tab, 25–30 for architectural, and 30–50 for Class 4 products. Actual service life depends on product, installation, climate, ventilation, and maintenance; these are not warranties.
