What Is a Roofing Square? A 2026 Guide to Roof Measurements

A roofing square equals 100 square feet of roof surface. Learn how contractors measure squares, apply waste, and quote per-square prices.

One roofing square = 100 square feet

Roofers commonly use a “square” as a material quantity: 100 square feet of roof surface. If the measured roof is 2,400 square feet, it contains 24 squares before waste. This is different from the home’s living area and different from the price “per square foot.”

The short answer

Ask a contractor whether a quoted “per square” rate means per 100 square feet, and whether the amount includes material, labor, tear-off, or only one line item.

Roof squares and home size

Living area is measured across floors; roofing area follows each sloped roof plane. Pitch, overhangs, porches, garages, dormers, hips, and valleys change the surface area. Two same-size homes can have different square counts. Ask for a roof diagram and measured area.

How material waste is handled

A roofer orders more material than the exact surface area to account for cuts, pattern layout, breakage, and product packaging. The appropriate allowance depends on roof shape and material. It should be explained in the estimate rather than hidden in an unexplained quantity.

Convert between units

  • 1 roofing square = 100 sq ft
  • 20 squares = 2,000 sq ft of measured roof
  • 24.5 squares = 2,450 sq ft of measured roof

A bid of $500 per roofing square corresponds to $5 per roof sq ft for that bid line, but check what the line includes. It does not mean that every full replacement costs $5 per sq ft. Tear-off, underlayment, flashing, permits, and deck repairs may be separate.

Use the roof replacement cost calculator with your home details, and ask the contractor to reconcile the calculator assumptions with the measured roof. See 2026 roof cost guides.
